I Want a Pony in the Afterlife

November 2023

Lithography 6x5x2in (15x12x5cm)

An exploration of three-dimensional prints, I examine how Western print methods historically used for early advertisements are connected to my Taiwanese background, specifically the Taoist tradition of joss paper burning, which involves burning objects made of paper to provide for the deceased. Centered initially around currency, the practice has evolved into creating replicas of everyday objects. I Want a Pony in the Afterlife reflects both my cultural roots and personal identity, referencing my Chinese zodiac sign, the horse. The animal also has significance in my Chinese name, “璿壹,” which contains the characters for corn and bean, symbols of abundance and nourishment, bestowed upon me by my mother as a wish for a life of plenty.
